- (1725-1805)painterBorn in Tournus, Jean-Baptiste Greuze studied art in Lyon and Paris, where he became a leading genre painter. He recalls in his works the Dutch masters of the 17th century, and he based his paintings on the tastes of his era, being influenced by jean-jacques rousseau and the writers Samuel Richardson and Henry Fielding. In 1755, at the Paris Salon, he had a great success with Un père de famille expliquant la Bible à ses enfants. His painting, sentimental and edifying, evolved toward a moralizing pathos (Le mauvais Fils puni) in accord with bourgeois drama and the comedy of denis diderot, who was his enthusiastic admirer. Greuze wanted to bring genre painting to the level of historical painting and produced vigorous and sensitive portraits (Sophie Arnould; Le Graveur Wille) and has also done strikingly honest interpretations of children and youths (La Cruche cassée, 1789). Greuze had numerous imitators, but his fame was eclipsed by that of JACQUES-LOUIS DAVID.
